Have you ever tried juicing dragonfruit? It is incredible!

The Lowdown on Dragonfruit

Dragonfruit, also known as Pitaya, is a member of of the cactus family and is native to Mexico and Central and South America. It is also grown in Southeast Asia, Israel and Vietnam. We eat tons of them in Australia. Since being introduced in the 1980’s, they have become quite prolific.

You can also find them at Asian market stores and grocers in the United States.

Different Varieties of Dragonfruit

Dragonfruit comes in three colors: two have pink skin, with either white or pink flesh, and the other is yellow with white flesh. All varieties contain edible flesh with black, crunchy seeds similar to a kiwi fruit. The flesh of the dragonfruit has a mild, delicate, slightly sweet flavor. The black crunchy seeds (which need to be chewed in order to be digested properly) taste a little nutty. The overall flavor is a cross between a kiwi and a pear.

My mum thinks fresh dragonfruit tastes bland like an underripe melon. Let me know what you think.

The Health Benefits of Dragonfruit

Dragonfruit flesh is low in calories and high in water. Red-skinned dragonfruit is amped up with antioxidants, and is a good source of vitamin C. It’s also rich in fiber, and contains small amounts of minerals such as phosphorus, iron, and calcium.

Dragonfruit helps neutralize free radicals, excrete heavy metal toxicity, regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, and clear respiratory congestion.

How To Eat A Dragonfruit

To eat a dragonfruit, cut it open with a sharp knife, and scoop out the pulp and seeds with a spoon. Don’t eat the skin. To juice dragonfruit, peel it, and push the flesh and seeds through your juicer.
